Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump today brings his campaign to West Palm Beach. Organizers expect supporters and protesters alike to show up — particularly as debates and outrage continue about the leaked audiotape of Trump describing aggressively kissing and groping women without consent.
“I just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it,” Trump says on the tape, before saying that includes grabbing women’s genitals. “You can do anything,” he is heard saying.
Some neighbors of the part-time Palm Beach resident were reluctant to discuss his 11-year-old comments, but a few offered their reactions this week.
Resident Toni Holt Kramer, founder of the Trumpettes, a group supporting the Republican nominee, said no one could claim what Trump said was nice. “It was not a statement that should have come out of Donald Trump’s mouth or anyone else’s mouth,” Kramer said from her home in Bel Air, Calif.
But Trump’s statements were “blown out of context,” she said.
In the leaked audio from 2005, Trump, a part-time Palm Beach resident, told Billy Bush, then co-host of Access Hollywood, that he aggressively attempted to seduce Bush’s colleague Nancy O’Dell, while she was in Palm Beach. The failed attempt included taking her furniture shopping.
Kramer said she “sort of” thinks Trump was baited by Bush. “I don’t think he realized he had a hot micropohone and perhaps he was showing off for this young man who was goading him,” Kramer said.
In any event, the vulgar statements should not be enough to determine one’s vote on Nov. 8, according to Kramer. “Boys will be boys,” she said.
“Why don’t you look at all of the issues that are involved — the terrible Wikileaks that are coming out, the negative laundry list of Hillary and Bill Clinton?” she asked.
Her group has planned an Adopt a Trumpette luncheon for Oct. 29 at Cafe L’Europe in Palm Beach to rally support for Trump, she said.
“We have an opportunity to help some people make up their minds that Donald Trump is the right man to be president of the United States. He is our next POTUS. If we value this country, then there is absolutely no choice. He is it,” Kramer said.
